Award winning Chinese film to be screened tomorrow

A Chinese film which won the Best Film Award at the Montreal World Film Festival has been selected as this month?s BIFF Film Club Feature.

?Postmen in the Mountains? will be screened tomorrow at 7.30 p.m. in the Tradewinds Auditorium of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute.

The film ? described as ?a work of exquisitely wrought simplicity? by the Los Angeles Times ? also picked up Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director awards at the Chinese Film Awards and an Audience Choice award at the Maine International Film Festival.

It tells the tale of an old postman, who on the eve of his retirement must turn his life?s work over to his son.

The postmen deliver mail by foot in the remote mountain areas of Hunan.

As the father and son set off on the father?s final mail delivery and the son?s first, they must travel 122 kilometres over three days.

?The trip is not as easy as Son thought it would be,? a BIFF press release said of the film. ?Walking in the endless, nearly deserted zigzag paths through the mountains, Son realises how much Father has contributed to his work and the people who depend on him to get messages to and from the outside world, and how much Mother has given up to support the family.

?When they finally get to a creek for a short cut, Son insists that Father should never touch the cold water again. He wades across the creek with his father on his shoulders.

?The distance between Father and Son evaporates. For Father, it reminds him of how he used to carry Son at a time that does not seem so long ago. At that moment, he knows he?s getting old....?

The film is in Mandarin with English subtitles.
