Good night for east teams in All-Stars
(CedarBridge won 4-1 on pens) After losing to Berkeley on penalty kicks in the schools final earlier in the week, CedarBridge finally came good from the penalty spot in the senior schools All-Star match last night at BAA Field.
Tafari Wilson, Ricky Saltus, Marlon Dill and Mackie Crane all scored from the penalty spot as CedarBridge converted their team's first four kicks.
CedarBridge goalkeeper Zane Hendrickson, who replaced Kedric Smith early in the second half, produced two important saves from The Rest's three kicks to deny Jason Hayward and then Kingsley Mundy. Jabari Furbert scored for the Rest.
Wilson got CedarBridge off to a good start in the penalties when he converted the first, while Hayward save his effort saved by teh diving Hendrickson.
Saltus was relieved to score CedarBridge's second when his kick straight down the middle hit the legs of the Gabriel Wilkinson before going in. That was followed up by Furbert scoring for the Rest.
Dill netted for CedarBridge who went up 3-1 when Hendrickson dived to his left to save from Mundy. Crane was then left with the task of completing the victory when he blasted low past Wilkinson.
The result avenged CedarBridge's lost to the Rest last year on penalty kicks in the inaugural match between the teams since the schools' restructuring. The Rest's team included players from Saltus, Berkeley and Warwick Academy.
CedarBridge took a deserved lead in the 13th minute when Heys Wolffe's cross from the left was put into his own goal by Ian Armstrong. CedarBridge concentrated most of their attacks down the left side where Wolffe, who plays in the First Division for Dandy Town, combined well with Crane.
Wolffe almost doubled the CedarBridge lead in the 27th minute when his near post shot was turned around the post by Gabriel Wilkinson.
The Rest scored their equaliser in first half injury time when Kedric Smith was blown down for too many steps by referee Leroy Wilson. The ball was touched to Joel Duffy who blasted into the far post.
Wolffe limped off with a foot injury early in the 67th minute as CedarBridge lost their most dangerous player.
However, substitute Ricky Saltus came close to scoring the winner in the 73rd minute when his goalbound shot was tipped over the bar by the 'keeper. Tafari Wilson was voted MVP for CedarBridge while Duffy got the honour for the Rest.
Middle Schools East 2 West 1 Barry Gibbons struck twice late in the first half as the East came from a goal down to clinch victory.
Jason Dill of Sandys shot the West into the lead in the 15th minute with a well struck volley into the far corner after a cross found him unmarked near the edge of the box.
Gibbons almost equalised in the 23rd minute when his shot was saved by the West goalkeeper after being put through by Fiqre Crockwell. Gibbons made amends on the half hour with a near post shot that swerved before beating the 'keeper.
Then in the last minute of the half D'mtri Butterfield flighted in a freekick from deep on the right and Gibbons, a student at Whitney, steered the ball into the goal from close range.
Butterfield almost converted a freekick himself late in the second half when he rocket from outside the box crasxhed against the crossbar with the 'keeper beaten. Otherwise most of the second half pressure was applied by the West who tried desperately to equalise.
Gibbons' two goals earned him the MVP award for the East while Chris Moulder of Spice Valley won the West MVP award.
Primary Schools East 2 West 0 Andre Jones netted in the 52nd minute and Randy Robinson in the 70th as the East beat the West in the opening match. Sacha Barry of Northlands was the MVP for the East and defender Ricco Furbert of West Pembroke the oustanding player for the West.
This was the 23rd annual All-Stars, with the East defending their title in the primary schools and the West and the Rest being dethroned in the middle and high schools matches.
