Two charged with senior's manslaughter

A 28-year-old man denied breaking into a home and committing a serious sexual assault when he appeared at the monthly arraignment session at Supreme Court yesterday.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons and is of no fixed abode, is accused of threatening to use a weapon while carrying out the alleged assault on January 19, 2005.

The case was listed for mention on August 1 and the defendant was remanded in custody.

Laurie Julian Leroy Furbert, 33, appeared at the hearing charged with the manslaughter of a senior. Furbert, of Westering Lane, Warwick, is jointly accused with Carmelita Francis-Pitcher of unlawfully causing the death of Gladys Smith, of Sandys, on March 26, 2002. The 81-year-old died at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

No plea was entered and Furbert?s bail was extended.

Francis-Pitcher, 35, of Mount Road, St. David?s, did not attend for medical reasons. The case was listed for mention on August 1.

A 24-year-old man accused of slitting a woman?s throat and assaulting Police officers pleaded not guilty to 13 charges yesterday.

The charges against Leonard O?Donnell Rayner, of Boss?s Cove, Pembroke, include one of wounding with intent, one of burglary, four of destroying or damaging property, two of having a bladed article in a public place and three of assaulting a police officer with intent.

They relate to an incident last November when Rayner is alleged to have entered a woman?s home and slit her throat.

The case was listed for mention on July 11 and there was no application for bail.

A 21-year-old man denied possession of forged bank notes at the session. Dwayne Kellan Reid, of Broome Street, Sandys, is accused of two offences on February 22 this year. His bail was extended and the case was set for mention on August 1.

Kyle Antoine Bridgewater, 32, of Angle Street, Hamilton, denied two charges of possession of cannabis with intent to supply and one of possession of a pipe fitted for the misuse of controlled drugs. The allegations date back to May 13, 2004. The case was listed for mention on August 1.

Marvin Lee Woolridge, 43, of Loyal Hill Pass, Devonshire, admitted ten offences, including stealing two cheque books, obtaining property by false pretences and uttering a false document.

The court heard that he stole the books on January 19 this year and used fraudulently signed cheques to buy televisions and laptops.

He told the court: ?I slipped up. I did have a drug problem. I apologise to the victim and to the court and taxpayers for wasting time.?

Woolridge was remanded in custody pending a social inquiry report and drug assessment. His case was listed for mention on August 1.
