Postal voting legislation to be brought in this summer
Government is to introduce legislation in the summer to bring in postal voting.
And it is also looking at other ways to modernise voting after the Parliamentary Registrar highlighted many problems despite nearly 100 percent of eligible people being registered to vote.
Reading the Registrar?s report Premier Alex Scott told The House of Assembly that the fact voters could be challenged at the polls without anyone having to prove wrongdoing was intimidating some from voting.
He said: ?So many were discouraged by going to the polls by canvassers, saying incorrect registration could be challenged at the polls.
?This could be a mistake, if not a more malicious attempt by canvassers.?
The Parliamentary Registrar also said a device should be allowed for people manning the polling booths to have time out to vote themselves.
The law saying celebrations and alcohol consumption cannot occur within 50 metres of a polling booth also ruled out many venues which was a problem with so many extra constituencies said Mr. Scott.
He said as private homes often fell within the 50 metre boundary the law was unenforceable anyway.
?We have to look afresh how we go about gathering our roster of various polling stations.?
