Violence erupts during Court Street celebrations
The May 24 Peace in the Streets party on Court Street proved anything but according to one mom who said her son was set upon by a group of youths and put in hospital.
She said a stream of people who had suffered similar fates trooped through the hospital?s emergency in the six-hours she spent there.
Her 21-year-old had been dancing with a friend near Fresh TV at about 11 p.m. when he bumped a woman who then encouraged six youths to attack him.
?The just beat the cr*p out of him,? the mother, who asked not to be named, said.
The woman feared the worst when she saw he was bleeding from the ears but a CAT scan showed no lasting damage.
?I was up at the hospital and kid after kid after kid came in. I could not believe how many. The doctors said my son was not alone ? everyone is here for the same thing.?
During her vigil she heard of one boy who was attacked by a group of about 15 people.
?Two women were driving by and picked him up and he ended up in hospital,? she said, adding that her own son had refused to report the attack on him for fear of reprisal.
?I have told him to stay away from Court Street. I am black and my kid is black but that element is there.
?He was up at the stadium and followed the music and went to Court Street but it ends in violence.
?You bring up a kid but you fear you could lose him because someone decides there life is worthless. It?s scary.?
Party organiser Elmore Warren refused to comment about the event yesterday but said a statement would be issued later while Police said there had been no reports of violence.
And a hospital spokeswoman said the emergency department had not had an unusual level of activity although she could not say what the cases were.
