Swan leads home Island team in Peachtree race
More than 20 runners from Bermuda took part in the mammoth Peachtree Road Race event in Atlanta, Georgia, on Monday, with Colin Swan leading home the Island contingent as he finished 572nd out of 55,000 competitors. The Peachtree race is generally regarded as having the biggest 10K race field in the world, a title it vies for with the BolderBoulder race in Colorado. It has been a popular destination for runners from Bermuda, and this year a large group mostly made up of Swan’s Running Club members took part.Others who raced were marathon veteran Cal Steede, who was 52nd in his age category in a time of 44.24, while Mark Albouy was 31st in his category in 46.12.Next to finish in the race, which has been held every July 4 since 1970, was Vernon Tankard in 48.26, followed by Derek Ming in 51.07, Alec Swan 51.58, Zina Jones 52.56, Vic Ball 53.34, Terence Douglas 53.37 and Jenene Douglas in 53.47.The importance of wearing race chips to get an accurate finishing time is underscored in an event with such an enormous amount of competitors as many runners actually cross the start line a long time after the race has officially begun.Going close to breaking the hour-barrier was Mayberline Black in 1.00.41. Other Bermuda athletes to complete the race were Karen Burchall 1.02.42, Clinton Curtis 1.03.24, Kathi Rogers 1.05.35, Elvin Thomas 1.06.18, Jewell Eve in 1.07.22, Darnell Todd-Wynn 1.08.08, Edwina Arorash 1.10.37, Joy Smith 1.12.08, Karen Perinchief 1.15.00, Florence Sharpe-Trott 1.15.04, Danlia Martin 1.15.08, Lauretta Stoneham 1.16.51, George Jones 1.30.33 and Donna Mae Arorash 1.54.27.The road race was won overall by Kenya’s Sammy Kitwara in 28.05, with Wernesh Kidane, of Ethiopia, first woman in 31.23.
