Developers Southpro were yesterday given final permission to create 29 lots for houses at Cachalot quarry in Southampton by the Development Applications Board.

The firm already has permission to build 141 condominiums on the 14-acre site, granted three years ago. That plan met with a chorus of objections from nearby farmers and the National Trust.

Now Southpro is to decide which scheme to go ahead with.

It is being pushed by the DAB, which has urged it to make progress with subdivision to relieve pressure on other green field sites and clean up the disused quarry.

"We had permission in principle for the lots and all we did was confirm it,'' said Mr. John (Chucky) Berg, president of quarrying firm SAL and Southpro.

"What we're going to do I don't know. I guess we'll make a decision when the time is right. Right now it's not the time.'' Objectors to the condo plan attacked a proposed 16-foot access road through farmland and the suggested bulldozing of a hill.
