Police tight-lipped on porn probe

Police are staying tight-lipped over an internal disciplinary hearing this week for an officer allegedly caught using a Police computer to download pornographic material.

Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said the officer was still working but it was not clear whether the hearing recommended Commissioner Jonathan Smith should fire him.

The officer, believed to be a Canadian constable, was reportedly discovered with printed porn images of children he had downloaded from the Internet using a Police computer 18 months ago.

There are no laws in Bermuda against downloading any kind of pornography from the Internet, unlike in Britain where it can carry a prison term.

But downloaded material which is then printed could qualify as obscene under the Obscene Publications Act and be subject to prosecution.
