UBP reiterates support for hi rises
When it comes to housing the only way is up according to the United Bermuda Party who yesterday reaffirmed their belief in high rise to bring in more units for sale.
The comments came from Opposition Housing Spokesman Wayne Furbert who said his party was prepared to accept seven or eight stories in North Hamilton.
However he said there would be no change in other scenic areas such as the North or South Shore.
Asked if the plan would be seen as an attempt to dump housing in North Hamilton he said environmental considerations and the views of the public would be taken into account.
"You cannot have high rise all around the island. That would be ridiculous."
And he said high rise developments were already popping up including Sir John Swan's block of flats Atlantis.
Asked about the opportunities for housing at the polluted 250-acre Morgan's Point in Sandys Mr. Furbert said there was already housing zoned there as well as land for tourism developments.
There were opportunities for development at Southside in the East End and Tudor Hill in Southampton said Mr. Furbert but he said it would all eventually run out.
"What happens if you build on these? Where do you build next? Is it the golf course or do we go up? That is the dilemma."
He said his party were also fully behind the sustainable development project which is looking at how much growth the island can take.
