Mr. Anthony Santucci would run in Southampton East.

Mr. Santucci, the food and beverage director at Sonesta Beach Hotel, is returning to the UBP after running for the National Liberal Party in the 1989 general election.

He polled 147 votes, finishing last among five candidates in Southampton East.

This year he joins electrical contractor and newcomer Mr. Calvin Simons on the UBP ticket, challenging Progressive Labour Party incumbents Mr. Reginald Burrows and Mr. Stanley Lowe.

Mr. Santucci, 32, was named to replace retired Police officer Mr. Dennis Ramsay as Mr. Simons' running mate. Mr. Ramsay withdrew from the race recently because of a technicality regarding his retirement benefits.

Before he left the party, Mr. Santucci chaired the UBP's Southampton East branch.

"The decision to stand for the United Bermuda Party was not an easy one,'' Mr. Santucci said yesterday. "I want to be able to be a part of the change which is taking place in Bermuda, and I know that I will have the ability to both initiate change and follow through with it.

"I want to be able to work with people who are prepared to accept change and new ideas.'' The NLP did not have the resources, and the PLP was "too based in its ideology for me to be comfortable,'' Mr. Santucci said.

The UBP also had that problem, but "the party has changed and wants to get on with new ideas,'' he said.

Educated at Robert Crawford and Bermuda College, Mr. Santucci studied at the University of New Haven's Department of Hotel Management before returning to the Island in 1986.

He worked at Cambridge Beaches before joining the Sonesta as Maitre D' in 1988. After helping to open a new Sonesta hotel in Curacao, he was named the hotel's food and beverage director in January.

UBP chairman Dr. James King said Mr. Santucci had refreshing honesty. "The party is proud to have candidates of this calibre come forward,'' he said.
