Sandys Youth Group about more than fun

Now that the Junior Committee of the Sandys Youth Group have finally received a building at Daniels Head, they want to clarify what they're all about.

Raymond Mouchette and Rundolph Fox, the 18-year-old co-chairmen of the Junior Committee, want members of the public to know how deeply involved the children are in the running of the group.

They also want members' children who wish to join the club to know there is a set curriculum that members (8-17) have to abide by.

"We are not a centre, we are a club where there is a set format. We do all sorts of community work as well as playing recreational games,'' Fox said.

He added the group has held potluck suppers for charity and visit old folks homes.

Mr. Fox said Sandys Youth Group executive committee chairman Mr. Fubler is not the sole leader of the group as decisions are made jointly by both committees.

Mr. Fox said young people who wished to join need only show up and fill out a card.

He said the group also required a $20 annual fee, but added it was not due until February, 1998.

Mr. Mouchette, who has watched the group wait for Government to give them a building since 1994, is happy to finally have one.

The official opening of the building came last Wednesday when the building was handed over to the group.

He said the group is now free to concentrate on club business. He said: "This group was first started by Mr. Fubler in order to provide children with something to do both in the summer and after school.'' And he added: "You hear so much about the youth acting rowdy and out of order but that problem wouldn't exist if they were given more productive things to do.'' Pointing out children need to stimulate both their bodies and their minds, he said the group offers more than just games.

He said: "Four p.m. until 6 p.m. is study and tutoring time. We have people come in from time to time to talk about different careers, so they children can get a feel for what they might want to do.'' Mr. Mouchette said the group welcomes members of the public who might like to come in and talk about their trade.

"There are a lot of retired teachers, artist, plumbers, lawyers and tradesmen who the children could benefit a great deal from.'' Mr. Mouchette said he hopes the Sandys group will start a trend throughout the Island with youth in every parish working to do more productive things in there area.

"Right now we have six groups of 15 with two adults in every group. But the adults only supervise.'' He said the idea of the group is to make the youth take more responsibility for themselves and keep them off the streets.

He said now that they have the building that can begin to be their main focus.

OPEN HOUSE -- Bermuda Land Development Company chief executive officer Carl Musson officially opens the Sandys Youth Group's new building at Daniels Head in Somerset. To his right is group founder Gerald Fubler.
