Leaders grab late equaliser as Onions pile on pressure

A late Steven Mendes equaliser kept Key West?s noses ahead in the Commercial A Division title race as MR Onions kept up the pressure at the weekend.

Mendes scored with just three minutes remaining against Lobster Pot who had gone one up via a Dave Allison penalty after a foul on Jameel Effendy.

Onions closed the gap behind Key West with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Dandy Town at BAA Field.

Onions opened the scoring after 15 minutes when the Town goalkeeper allowed a weak Eoghan O?Dwyer shot to slip through his hands and into the net.

The remainder of the first half was a tight encounter with few chances. But Onions killed the game off with two goals early in the second half, the first from a Nick Briggs cross from the right which was superbly volleyed home by Colin Keane.

Briggs scored the third when a mis-hit cross from the right somehow landed in the back of the net and resulted in Roots changing their goalkeeper.

The replacement keeper made two excellent saves to deny Onions further goals. Town?s only clear chance came with about ten minutes remaining but Onions goalkeeper Chris Hewson saved well from a header. Lester Pun completed the scoring late in the game with a well taken right-foot finish.

North Village moved up to third after a 3-1 win over PHC.

Raiders went one-up in the first two minutes as Sheridan (Baldy) Ming latched on to a neat flick over the top from Andre Caines and slotted the ball past Rams keeper Ricky Hill.

But Ming and former pro Kyle Lightbourne blew further chances and Jamel Smith got one back after Raiders failed to clear their lines.

Village left it very late to wrap up the win. In the 90th minute Tillman Darrell blasted home a penalty after Mark Wade was blown for a foul on PJ Coddington despite protests from the home side. But there was no dispute about Darrell?s second as he slotted home in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Valley picked up a rare win and moved off the bottom after beating BAA 1-0 from a Kevin McNeil strike.

Valley swapped places with St. George?s who lost 2-0 at home to Robin Hood after second half goals from Craig Crichlow and Dale Brangman.

Runaway B Division leaders Island XI continued their charge towards promotion by beating Boulevard 8-2.

Pest Control went down 2-1 to Devonshire Lions in a close game at Shelly Bay in which the Pest team were once again left to rue woeful finishing and an inability to string things together in the final third of the pitch.

Pest took the lead on 75 minutes through Aaron Brown who fired a rocket into the bottom left corner. Lions roared back and were on level terms within five minutes after Gary (Tuba) Mallory converted a cross from six yards.

Lions then struck again with what turned out to be the last kick of the game after Pest failed to cut out a corner, allowing Dennis Williams to drill home the winner past stand-in keeper Troy Crockwell at the near post.

Five teams sat out the weekend ? the Prospect/Fire v Devonshire All-Stars and Hamilton Parish v Somerset Bridge Peskies fixtures were postponed while Vasco had a bye.

There was also little meaningful action in the C Division.

League leaders Somerset Extros called off their game against Dockyard Falcons out of respect to former Somerset Cricket Club president Alfred Simmons who died earlier in the week. Second-placed MR Onions pick up a 3-0 walkover win after Prison Officers were forced to play a friendly as they turned up at their own pitch short-handed.

Dandy Town Roots also won by default after just one Warwick United player turned up for the fixture at St. John?s Field.
