Trial of man accused of murdering footballer to begin

Murder victim: Shaki Crockwell

The trial of a man accused of shooting footballer Shaki Crockwell dead is due to open this morning.Derek Spalding, 36, of Pembroke, is charged with premeditated murder and using a firearm to commit the killing. He denies the charges.Mr Crockwell, a striker for Bermuda’s national football team, was found dead on the Railway Trail in Devonshire on August 24 2007. He was aged 25 and from Pembroke.A jury panel of eight men and four women was selected yesterday to hear the case. It was then adjourned so lawyers could deal with some pretrial issues.The Crown is represented by Carrington Mahoney and Maria Sofianos. They are expected to open the case with a speech to the jury this morning. The defence lawyers are Mark Pettingill and Kamal Worrell. Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves will preside over the case.
