Another tough match-up for struggling Devonshire
the Premier Division as league cricket resumes tomorrow after a two-week break.
Bay, Southampton Rangers, Western Stars and St. George's all have maximum points from three matches, but while the other three face unpredictable opponents, Bay should not have too much trouble with bottom team Warwick at Southampton Oval.
Rangers have emerged as the surprise team so far, leading the division on strike rate. Tomorrow they travel to Sea Breeze Oval to take on mid-table Cleveland while St. George's travel west to meet Somerset and Stars are away to Devonshire Rec in the day's top match.
Stars, who meet Social Club today in the first round of the Central Counties, are fresh off their first Camel Cup triumph last weekend and should be favourites over a Devonshire Rec. side who have had a slow start to the season, winning just one of their first three matches.
However, any team possessing the all-round strength of Devonshire certainly should not be taken lightly as they could hit form at any time. Their two recent losses were against St. George's and Bailey's Bay, so this match will be their third straight against one of the top contenders. Next week they go up against Police in what has been a tough start to the season.
Both Rec. and Stars are solid in the batting department where the home team have captain Albert Steede, Donald Norford, Anthony Amory, Roger Trott and Jason Lewis while Stars can call on brothers Arnold and Andre Manders, Jeff Richardson, Gregory Sampson and Anthony Foggo.
It may be in the bowling department where Devonshire will have to excel, and already they are hampered by the loss of Mark Trott who is away on business.
Rangers have handed out an early championship warning with three straight wins, though they have yet to meet one of the top teams, which will come next weekend when they travel to St. John's field to meet league champions Western Stars. Tomorrow Rangers take on a Cleveland side in search of their second win of the season.
St. George's will be looking to bounce back from their Camel Cup disappointment when they travel to meet Somerset who are within range of the top teams after two wins in their first three matches.
Willow Cuts should bounce back from their Camel Cup disappointment with a win over new boys PHC at White Hill field. PHC are finding the going tough in the Premier Division having lost all three of their matches so far.
St. David's continue their search for their first win of the season under new captain James Pace when they take on Hamilton Parish at Wellington Oval while Police and Somerset Bridge, both with two wins from three matches, meet at Police field. In the other match, winless Social Club are at home to Flatts at St. John's field.
