Interest in volunteering is high amongst public
Are you prepared to go out of your way to show you care for others in the community?
As The Royal Gazette's 'Dare to Care' campaign builds momentum this week, this paper took to the streets to find out what people were or were not doing to make a positive difference.
Some, like 51-year-old Althea Iris, regularly take food to the homeless; others like 27-year-old 'Teddy' Burch have yet to commit themselves to any positive cause.
Everyone said they would be interested in volunteering if they could find the time off from work or find a cause they were serious about.
Ms Iris said: "I grew up in Bermuda and you know just doing nice things makes me feel good. I sell papers down on Front Street and there are homeless people there, so everyday I bring something from home [for them].
"I had my anniversary and I brought cake; the day before we had a turkey from my church. I cut the turkey, put it all in little sections, and I bagged them up with two slices of bread and gave it to the homeless guys."
Mr. Burch, a 27-year-old entrepreneur, said he doesn't volunteer, but would be interested in starting. "Depends what it is. I am interested in heart disease because it's one of the biggest killers. It's here and it's not going anywhere."
A 26-year-old painter, who would not give his name, said he doesn't do formal volunteering.
"I don't have no problem helping the community, it all just depends what the cause is. If it is a good cause like kids or [helping] the youngsters coming up now then I am all for it," he said.
Ann Daniels, 50, said: "I volunteer with a music foundation and also a foundation that supports the learning disabled. I think it is important because even though my kids are taken care of, there are others that need help."
Gihan Silva, 31, a chef at Four Ways Restaurant said: "I have only been here two weeks. I am interested in volunteering, but I am still new, so we will see."
Lisa Lewis, 40, cinema assistant at Speciality Cinema and Grill said: "I used to volunteer at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute working in the Oceans gift shop and (help with) special functions. They stopped calling me.
"But I would be interested in doing something else because I like to help people, I really do. The thing is because of my work schedule I am not on a set schedule."
