Teachers' Redmond banned two games
they attempt to win their third straight game on Sunday.
Not suprisingly, Redmond received a two-game suspension yesterday for punching a player during Teachers' 37-11 victory over Renegades last weekend. Redmond was caught in the act by referee Norman Wilson a few minutes before the end of the first half.
Fortunately for Teachers, however, the suspension will involve only one game that will actually count in the Amstel League standings. That is because there will be a three-week hiatus after this weekend's games for the World Rugby Classic from November 7-14. The other game that will see Redmond relegated to the sidelines will be the Onions and Limeys exhibition tilt on November 11.
The decision was made following a meeting of the Bermuda Rugby Football Union disciplinary committee. Redmond was in attendance along with Teachers captain Alvin Harvey.
"He expected it,'' said Harvey matter-of-factly. "I honestly didn't see him punch anyone, but the referee's report was quite damning. He (Redmond) was remorseful but he didn't think it happened quite the way the referee put it.'' Harvey is now faced with the difficult task of finding a replacement for Redmond for Sunday's key match against Police, who are 1-1 this season. After Redmond's dismissal last week, Harvey made the switch to a two-man back row with Terry Walsh handling most of Redmond's duties.
Players will have an added incentive to play well this weekend since the decision on who will make up the national team for the Caribbean tournament from November 27 to December 5 will be made following Sunday's games.
A total of 22 players will be chosen -- 11 forwards and perhaps eight backs and three half-backs -- by a five-man selection committee, which includes national team coach Keiron Peacock, Derek Hurdle of Teachers, Kim White of Police, Stuart Outerbridge of Renegades and Craig McCorkall of Mariners.
