Police issue warning about fake Nokia 'mobile' phone promo

A scam text message has bombarded the Island.Claiming to come from a Nokia representative, the message tells recipients they have won a ‘Nokia end-of-year mobile promo”.Police said the Financial Crime Unit has received hundreds of complaints from irate residents. The texts are difficult to trace because they are sent from pre-paid phones, and use anonymous email addresses from free sites like Hotmail.A spokesman said: “These text messages are sent out by the thousands and the culprits simply download telephone numbers from online telephone directories; in other words, those receiving the text message have not been individually targeted by the scammers.”The text requests money in order to receive a nonexistent prize. Police reminded the public to be cautious of unexpected requests for funds, especially via text or from persons whose identity cannot be verified.
