Try some purple love in a bottle

* Strykz Bowling Lounge is hosting its first Halloween Party for families on Thursday, October 31st. From 5pm until 10pm, you can expect a candy buffet, cosmic bowling, scary movies on the big screens and a prize for the best costume. * Sandys 360 Sports, Aquatic & Enrichment Centre presents an all day conference with a focus on Bermuda’s gang issue on Friday, November 1st. From 9am until 4pm, Saving Our Sons, will feature local and international presenters with seminars, workshops, presentations, discussions, strategies. This event is aimed at all stakeholders, including parents, educators, community leaders, youth/corporate & business personnel, civil servants, union leaders and members, prison officials, and church leaders and members. Registration costs $35 per person, which includes coffee/juice breaks, and lunch. Some scholarships are also available. * Back by popular demand, Discovery Wines invite you to their newly-decorated warehouse on Bakery Lane to celebrate “Purple Love in a Bottle” as they host their Second Annual Zin Din on Saturday, November 2nd. From 6pm, they promise a stellar line up to celebrate Zinfandel wines with some serious Old Vines to be tasted. In order to encourage guests to bust out their own bottles of Zin, there will also be a draw for hundreds of dollars worth of wine and wine associated gifts. The number of dollars you spent on the bottle of Zin you bring to share at the dinner will determine how many tickets you get in the draw. * Intertwining: Where Fashion & Art Meet, the next in the PartnerRe Art Lecture Series at Bermuda National Gallery will be on Friday, November 8th. The guest speaker will be Jessica Regan of the Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, who will discuss the role of fashion in 18th century portraiture. The reception takes place in the Bermuda National Gallery at 5.30pm, while the lecture starts at 6pm. Tickets are $10 for members and $20 for non-members. * Poetry fans are in for a treat as St Peter’s, Their Majesties Chappell is hosting a Poetry Reading by Ronald Lightbourne at 5pm on Sunday, November 10th. Bermudian Ronald Lightbourne, the son of missionaries, grew up travelling the entire Caribbean and Belize, returning to Bermuda aged 17 and attended the Berkeley Institute. Following the reading, refreshments will be served in the Edith Clair Spencer Church Hall. Admission is free. For more information, contact office@stpeters.bm.

* The next in the Historical Heartbeats Lecture Series will be a Film Night on Thursday, November 14th, screening two 30 minute films from Brendan Hollis’ About Bermuda Series. The first film at 6pm, Law and Order, explores the policing of the Island, from the duties of a 17th century parish constable to the sophisticated police service of the 1990s. The second film, The Bermuda Railway, tells the story of perhaps the most expensive railway, per mile, ever built. The last spike was driven in on 31 October 1931. Just 17 years later that same spike was ceremoniously removed as the Bermuda Railway was dismantled. This event is free to the public. * Promoting fashion as art, the Bermuda Fashion Collective Show, presented by Bermuda Society of Arts (BSoA) on Thursday, November 14th, will feature ten of Bermuda’s top fashion designers, showcasing their eclectic style and unique energy. Designers featured in the show include Amethyst, Celine Morton, Dana Cooper, Dean Williams, Edith Rookes, Julan, Nicole Iris, Rene Hill and Tabitha Simmons. Doors open at 5.30pm and the show starts at 6pm. Tickets are $40 or $70 for front row seats and the price includes a pre-show glass of bubbly and after-show reception to meet the designers. * Expect fun for all the family at the T.N. Tatem Middle School Community Fun Fair on Saturday, November 16th (rain date is November 23rd). From 11am until 8pm, you can expect food, games, a Senior’s Tent, a white-elephant sale and a raffle draw at 7pm. Parking is free and admission is $3 or $10 for a family of 4, and free for children under 5.

* Kwanzaa is a weeklong celebration beginning on Thursday, December 26th and aims to bring African-American communities together through a holiday that includes aspects of various harvest celebrations. Children aged three and over can join the Kwanzaa celebrations by participating in Storytime and Craft activities at the Bermuda Youth Library Auditorium from 2.30pm until 4.30pm on Saturday, December 14th.
