Drug addict went on Hamilton theft spree
A drug addict?s two-week theft spree in Hamilton will see him committed to Supreme Court for sentencing.
Charles Howard Ebbin, 46, of Friswells Lane, Pembroke admitted breaking and entering into five offices and stealing various items including cash, CDs, video equipment, and jewellery between August 8 and August 23.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner heard that when was he was arrested by Police on August 23 he admitted stealing the items because he needed money to buy drugs.
Crown counsel Oonagh Vaucrosson told the court that between August 8 and August 9 Ebbin burgled the offices of Mello Jones and Martin on Church Street and stole a total of $169 in cash.
Ebbin then returned to the offices of the law firm for a second pillage between August 12 and August 15 and searched through employees? desks causing damage to them and to a safe he attempted to break open. He stole a portable CD player, a CD and a radio cassette player.
Ebbin?s crime spree continued between August 12 and August 15 when he burgled Dr. Niall Aitken?s office on King Street with intent to steal, breaking a window in the process.
The court heard that between August 13 and August 15 the defendant gained access to Personality Footworks in the Washington Mall in Hamilton and broke a large glass window, ransacked the store and stole a total of $955, removed from two bank bags under the cash register.
Between August 12 and August 15 Ebbin burgled the Bermuda Insurance Institute on Cedar Avenue, breaking through a partition wall, breaking into rooms and stealing a video recorder.
Then between August 22 and August 23 he burgled Mel?s Showcase Hair and Wig Centre in the Washington Mall and stole a gold chain priced $150, a gold necklace, priced $5 and gold bracelet, priced $50.
On a separate matter Ebbin also pleaded guilty to stealing $3000 from his mother from her residence on Friswells Lane on August 9 where he entered her bedroom where she had concealed the money in a bill fold under a pillow while she was in the bathroom of the residence.
Ms Vaucrosson said Ebbin, who is unemployed, has a criminal record dating from 1971 and on June 17 he was released from custody.
Before committing Ebbin to Supreme Court for sentencing for pleading guilty to six counts of breaking and entering and for stealing Mr. Warner asked the defendant if had anything to say.
Ebbin responded: ?I would like to apologise, I have had a drug habit for years and for stealing and I need help.?
