Bromby warns Olympic rivals with Spa victory

Peter Bromby is continuing to prove why he is indeed the brightest ?Star? among the Island?s Olympic prospects.

Sailing impressively throughout the regatta, the Bermudian lifted the Star Class championship at prestigious Spa Week in Medemblik, the Netherlands, yesterday.

Partnered by Lee White, Bromby sent an ominous signal to rivals 75 days before the start of the Summer Games in Athens as he wrested the title with a low-score 32 points among 34 competitors.

Canada?s Ross Macdonald ? the 1992 Olympic bronze medallist ? was runner-up with 36 points while hometown favourite Mark Neeleman edged out Britain?s Iain Percy by a point for third place with 38 points.

En route to victory in the nine-race series (with two drops), Bromby finished 16th, 17th, 5th, 1st, 3rd, 2nd, 5th and 15th before crowning his success with a win in the final race at the International Sailing Centre about 40 kilometres from Amsterdam.

The 39-year-old?s last major mission before the Olympics is Kiel Week in Germany from June 19 to 27.

Meanwhile, the Island?s other international and Olympic-bound skipper, Paula Lewin, fared disappointingly in the Yngling class.

She placed 17th out of 23 with 81 points accompanied by crew Peta Lewin and Christine Patton.

That class was won by Germany?s Kristin Wagner with 32 points, boasting seven top-ten finishes in nine races.
