Island’s tug fleet is at full power

In service: The Marine and Ports tug Powerful. All three of the Island’s tugs are back in operation following a major refit to Powerful

The Island’s tug fleet is back up to full strength.

The Powerful has been out of action for several months despite undergoing a major refit in the US last year.

But the tug was back on the water this week.

For most of the summer the tugs Faithful and Edward M Stowe have been responsible for ushering ships into harbour.

The return of the Powerful to service was welcomed by shipping agents.

Joe Simas, vice-president of Meyer Shipping, said: “We welcome the return of the Powerful to service.

“It’s good news for all of us.

“Previously when there were just two tugs in service it had the potential to cause delays if there were cruise ships and tankers arriving at the same time.

“Tankers arriving in St George’s require two tugs to be on hand when they dock.

“The fact that there are now three active tug boats again should eradicate the possibility of delays in berthing.”

The Royal Gazette asked Marine and Ports for details on why it had taken so long to get the Powerful back into service.

But we were simply told: “The Ministry can confirm that the Powerful is back in service.”
