April 5, 2013Dear Sir,For how much longer is the public prepared to put up with the lengthy road closures in Hamilton?The work involved appears to go on and on, taking an inordinate amount of time which just wouldn’t be tolerated in other capitals of the world.The lower part of Par-la-Ville Road has been closed for months while the upper part was closed also for a long period.Maybe the fact that just one person was working on it around 2.30pm on Friday might be a reason?Over the past year or so new sidewalks at the Supermart, Post Office, opposite the docks, etc, all took interminable amounts of time and while the Corporation may talk about replacing old pipes as the excuse, the bottom line is these jobs are taking far too long.One can only be thankful that Delwood School was on holiday as some child there could have been seriously injured, or worse, with the collapse of the wall.To suggest the problem was the structure of the wall is a bit self-serving and used to cover up incompetence.One would have thought that someone would have checked out the surrounding before undertaking this task to make sure no problems would be encountered.Now that road is closed and likely to be, based on experience, for quite some time.This is the same organisation which painted a left turn only sign on Church Street at the Post Office!And, heaven help us, but this is the same group which plans to oversee the development of Hamilton’s waterfront but, if one believes what the environmental experts say about the seas rising, by the time the job is finished Reid Street will be the new waterfront!FED UPDevonshire
