Island Powerboat racer claims world crown
Bermudian powerboat racer Chris Marshall claimed the Offshore Super Series World Championship over the weekend ? albeit with little competition.
Blown engines for his opponents in the final of two races and the non-appearance of the other two competitors ensured Marshall's win in the Cat Outboard Division was more of a procession in racing along the St. Pete Beach shore.
Marshall, with throttleman Dennis Berry aboard won the first race and went into the second race with only and to compete against.
But the latter broke down as the race began, needing a clamp bracket for the right motor and having blown the left one in the first race.
Down to a two-horse race, the event then saw leading into the seventh lap, blew an engine allowing Marshall and Berry through to first place and a first world championship since 2000.
"We've been second every year since then," said Berry. "There's a lot of luck in this."
