Wolves tamed by Hurdle's decider
A spirited Wolves team were floored by a Kevin Hurdle goal after 55 minutes of this Martonmere Cup game at BAA field on Saturday night.
The big striker got a lucky bounce after a cross brushed against a defender, which allowed him to drive home a left-footed shot from close range to break the deadlock for Town.
For their fierce competitiveness throughout this mediocre match, Wolves certainly deserved to come away with a share of the points.
After the Hurdle setback Wolves suffered further agony near the end when substitute Nathan Webb missed a sitter -- blasting a rebound wide from just 12 yards after Mark Ray's thundering shot from outside of the box was brilliantly blocked by goalkeeper Antoine Lightbourne.
Play was largely uneventful during the first 45 minutes, as defences took command.
But Town held a slight edge with Hurdle getting in a dangerous position but tamely placing a left-footed shot wide of the post after 15 minutes.
Wolves responded with their first chance after 24 minutes when forward Nakia Smith placed a soft header at Lightbourne. While Town had the territorial advantage for the rest of the half it was Wolves who threatened, but time and again Lightbourne leapt to claim dangerous crosses.
Inspired on by hard-working Mark Ray and Anthony Thomas in midfield, Wolves fought hard for the equaliser, but the Town defence allowed them few openings.
After 70 minutes new player Chae Simmons, a tireless worker throughout, slammed a 25-yarder just over the bar and then Nakia Smith headed a Jared Peniston cross just over.
Town responded after 83 minutes with substitute Raymond Beach firing a ball from a corner by substitute Seyoum Tuzo just wide of the upright.
Wolves though could have still got the equaliser but Webb blew the opening created by Ray at the end.
