Burgess hits ton -- but Flatts fall short
Flatts 258 Phillip Burgess struck a superb 127 but his heroics couldn't inspire Flatts to victory at Devonshire Rec. yesterday.
Thanks to an impressive 95 by Glenn Blakeney, combined with a fluent 59 not out by O.J.Pitcher, the east enders were able to score a 22-run victory in what turned out to be an exciting game.
Burgess and his skipper Gershon Gibbons put Flatts in a position where they made favoured St. David's sweat it out, as both teams played aggressively.
In their chase for a winning target of 281, the pair added 135 for the second wicket after opener Troy Dean (15) was out with the score on 25.
Once Gibbons was out with the score on 161 and after stroking seven fours and two sixes, Burgess stayed and continued to feast off the mediocre bowling attack until they reached 247 when he was finally bowled by Sammy Robinson.
His forceful knock included nine fours and 11 sixes.
With the score now on 247 for eight, there were no batsmen left capable of taking the team to their victory target.
Robinson finished with three for 43 off eight overs while skipper Del Hollis returned three for 53 off 8.5 overs.
Flatts bowlers also paid dearly for their uninspiring efforts with Blakeney and O.J.Pitcher pounding them all over the small ground.
Blakeney, caught off Phillip Burgess just five short of his century, finished with six sixes and eight fours while Pitcher remained undefeated with two sixes and five fours.
Also among the runs were Landro Minors with 36, Chris Foggo with 25 and Hollis with 24. Troy Bean had two wickets for 45 off eight overs while Rahji Edness had two for 49 off four overs.
Cleveland 185 Southampton 186-3 Reigning Premier League champions Southampton Rangers rebounded from a dismal opening day performance to record their first win, a seven wicket defeat of Cleveland at Southampton Oval.
Opener Kwame Tucker paved the way for the home side's triump with an unbeaten knock of 81 which included five sixes and six fours.
Tucker and his skipper, cousin Janeiro Tucker, ripped the heart out of Cleveland with a 94-run third wicket partnership that all but confirmed the result, with the latter contributing exactly 50. It was then left for Kwame and Ian Armstrong to pick off the rest of the runs in an unbroken stand of 55 for the fourth wicket.
Earlier Curtis Jackson and Anthony Bascome had weighed in with a pair of half centuries, with the former notching 59, while the latter ended 52 not out.
Rangers paceman Garry Williams, making his first appearance of the year, appeared in mid-season form, taking three for 30 from 10 overs, while Janeiro Tucker duplicated his team-mate with three for 25 from his quota.
Somerset Bridge 71 Devonshire Rec. 75-2 White Hill Field was ready this week but the home team clearly were not as visiting Devonshire romped to an eight wicket triumph with Rudolph Smith leading the charge with five wickets.
Monroe Darrell assisted Smith at the other end, claiming three for 24.
Perry Saunders was the only Bridge batsman to offer resistance, scoring 19 as Bridge lasted a mere 22 overs.
Devonshire made short work of the total, reaching the target in just 11.4.
Caldon Grimes managed his first half century of the season, scoring an unbeaten 62 from 42 balls.
PHC 236 Somerset 237-9 Somerset had to pull out all the stops to make it two wins out of two at Sea Breeze Oval as PHC took them down to the wire before losing in the last over.
With four overs deducted, Somerset needed to score at five runs an over. They achieved it with just two balls remaining after Leon Place and Kareem Fubler scored two runs in the final over, from a wide and a single, to seal victory by one wicket.
Place was the Somerset hero, scoring 83 not out after coming in at number three. Next high bats were Wendell White with 37, Shaun Roberts (35) and Craig Brangman (25).
Charles Symons, the seventh PHC bowler used, claimed three for 25 while Cal Waldron had two for 48.
Earlier Symons also came good with the bat, smashing 41 in the tail end as they reached the 200 mark. James Pace was top bat with 45 while number 10 Shoron Hunt scored 32 not out, Waldron 29 and Shawn Woolridge 23.
Place took three for 47, Tony Cheeseman three for 61 and David Gibbs two for 49 for the west enders.
Social Club 109 Police 111-3 Police cruised to an emphatic victory over Social Club, despite fielding a nine-man team as some players had already left for the Caribbean to watch the West Indies/Pakistan Test match.
Kenny Phillips, Michael Jackman and David Greenidge combined to take six wickets and Greenidge led the batting with a brisk 44 to lead the home team to their comfortable triumph.
Social Club were dismissed for 109 with opener Kevin Lapsley top scorer with 22. The only other player in double figures was veteran Gary Williams with 14.
Despite scoring slowly, Social Club made the bowlers toil for wickets, occupying the crease for 40.5 overs and doing well to reach the century mark.
Phillips finished with two for 36 off 10 overs, veteran Jackman two for 15 off 10 overs with four maidens and Greenidge two for 21 off four overs.
Police raced to victory in just 12.4 overs with openers Terry Thomas and Greenidge putting on 64. Skipper Stevie Lightbourne followed with 14 and Ferdinand Thorne 11 not out.
