Green?s a go at the Stoplight Party

Image by Jon LegereMix and mingle: The Stoplight party is set to get underway in full colour tomorrow night at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess. Wear red if you're taken, yellow, if you are in between, and green, if you are good to go.

People who feel intimidated walking into a bar or a party where everyone else seems to be already in their own cliques have a chance to show their true colours tomorrow at a party aimed at encouraging people to mix and meet new people.

Guests at the Stoplight Party at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess are being encouraged to wear different colours to show their status.

The aim of the party is to take away the inhibitions and barriers that some feel when they go out partying, said Volcanic party organiser Jon Legere.

?When you walk into a bar, some people feel intimidated just walking up to someone and talking to them,? he said. ?But this is just going to encourage people to interact a little.

?The idea is to really get people from all walks of life to integrate with each other. I think one of the problems with parties is that you turn up, usually stay with your clique, and there is really no incentive to go and talk to anyone else.

?But visually it is an immediate incentive, when you see green people who are single and you are not stepping on anyone?s toes. You can ask to buy them a drink or something. So I think it is going to be kind of nice. And it works both ways for the men and the women.?

If you are single and on the market for a partner then the colour to wear is green.

If you are, shall we say, in between then the colour is yellow. And for those in a committed relationship ? wear red.

?The idea behind it is to get people to integrate with those that they normally wouldn?t mix with,? said Mr. Legere.

?Visually you?ll be able to sort people out who are interested in meeting people, people that are already in relationships and people that don?t care or those who are not in relationships, but are using the yellow shirt as a backup. Also some people might feel more comfortable wearing yellow so that they don?t get approached or hit on by every single person. It depends on your preference really.?

The Stoplight Party will be at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess in the Princess Rooms and, weather permitting, on the Regency Terrace.

?It will be indoors and if the weather is nice we will open it up onto the terrace,? Mr. Legere said. ?We have a whole bunch of chimeneyas so people can sit out there in the warmth.?

There will also be prizes and games to help the Spotlight partygoer interact with others.

?Bacardi is on board and we are doing a special game,? said Mr. Legere.

?When you arrive you will be given a word and there will be four or five other people with that word out in the group, but everyone gets a different word so you have to go and find that person with that word and if you do, you get a special Bacardi prize or drink. So there is an incentive to go up and talk to someone.?

Music will be provided by Mr. Legere himself and the Dirkistan Freedom Fighters and Friends.

?We are going to have an array of music that will range all the way from the 80s to the present day.

?It should be really good party music.?

When asked what the reason was behind putting on this particular party, the organiser of both the Halloween Ball and the BAA New Year?s Eve bashes said: ?We like to do a winter party and the idea was brought to us by Nina Thompson who worked with us on the Halloween Ball.

?It is quite a popular theme in Canada and London ? it is nothing that we created. We are just going to do it here first.

?I think it can be frustrating for a lot of people here on the Island in thinking that there are not that many people available.

?But, I think differently ? I think there is a lot of opportunity here. People like to have a good time, they go out and this just makes it very simple when it comes to distinguishing who?s available and who?s not.

?It is also about getting different ethnic groups and races to integrate, we will have a nice wide spectrum of people attending and that is what the Volcanic parties are about. They are Bermudian parties, but it is also about bringing foreign workers and Bermudians together.?

Although the party might come across as a night for singles, Mr. Legere stressed that the party was not just a ?singles? event.

?If you are in a relationship, you still love to have a good time,? he said.

?It is just getting a lot of people together. Maybe pairing off couples who may want to see if they and another couple have something in common to do dinner parties. Who knows??

If it is successful Volcanic plans to do it again.

?We will make it an annual event along with our other events,? he said.

?It is a little warmth for the winter and I guess February is the month of love, although we didn?t want to do it around Valentine?s Day as there is always too much pressure and so much going on.?
