Massachusetts pair pull off first upset

Club's Invitational tournament yesterday when they defeated third ranked Dick Mount and Sandy White in a three-hour 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 victory at the Coral Beach and Tennis Club.

The pair from Massachusetts are no strangers to the competition, picking up a pair of victories in the past and were quarter-finalists a year ago. The husband and wife team returned to centre court later in the day to defeat Ann Scheland and Michael Keyes 6-1, 6-1.

Bermudian Wilfred Gonsalves completed the other major upset by beating fourth seed Reto Kraver of Zurich, Switzerland, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 in a three-hour thriller.

"I actually won it in the tie-break when Reto was long with an easy overhead at the net giving me a 5-2 lead and serve,'' recalled Gonsalves. "When he missed that I felt the wind leave his sails and all I had to do was concentrate and win my two serves, which I did.'' It was a match which featured several highs and lows, with the momentum swinging from one player to another as Gonsalves led 5-3 and was 40-0 in the second set before losing.

"That really should have been my cue,'' said Kraver. "I don't know why I didn't play more relaxed because I really couldn't lose anything after having gained what I felt was the upper hand. I just missed too many easy shots in the tie break.'' Tournament organisers, meantime, are pleased to have been able to attract so many senior players to the Island for the week-long tournament. "We have the advantage over next week's Coral Beach Open in that we have more senior events,'' said Tournament Director Hugh Barit.

In other matches yesterday, men's second seed Thomas Eggenschwiller defeated Eugene Simmons 6-1, 6-0 while men's top seed Mike Curry struggled before stopping Earl Leader in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).

Third seed Peter Harvey roared back from losing the first set to win his match 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
