Clock is a bad idea
September 30, 2010
Dear Sir,
I find it hard to believe that Rotary has the time, the energy, and may I say the sense, to advocate for a clock to be placed on the roundabout at the bottom of Trimmingham Hill.
1. It will most certainly cause drivers to take their eyes off the road at such a dangerous intersection.
2. Rubber necking will slow the traffic down at a vital time of the day.
3. Who doesn't know the time anyway?
4. As charming as our dear Mr. Barnes is, I have always thought he was a distraction.
There is a lovely story I heard about the Dockyard, years ago when its naval operations were in full swing.
There were two things that never got stolen: "The toilet seat and the Clock. The toilet seat because it was always being sat upon, and the workers never took their eyes off the Clock!"
I rest my case.

Promote breastfeeding
October 6, 2010
Dear Sir,
Shall we kill two birds with one stone here? Why not make it as inconvenient as possible to feed newborns formula and as convenient as possible for mothers to breast feed? We cannot deny that it would be great for the health of babies and there is now good evidence that breast cancers are prevented by breast feeding.
So big, bigger tax on formula with exemptions for mothers who have good medical reasons to use formula. Let's put all kinds of incentives and encouragement in place for breast feeding. Free Government paid rental of breast pumps for new moms to express milk on the job, (larger firms could take up the challenge by supplying pumps to their employees). Free counselling to expectant and new mothers on the art of breast feeding.
I'll start the ball rolling by giving free products from my business to mothers breast feeding for the first year. What about it Bermuda, let's get this started!
