Woman denies $1.5 million bank fraud
A woman accused of committing a fraud in excess of $1.5 million against the Bank of Bermuda has pleaded not guilty to a string of offences.
Elizabeth Olive Simons, 54, is said by the prosecution to have committed the crimes while working at the bank.
She faces a total of 15 charges of of stealing, forgery and uttering false documents.
Simons, of Camp Hill, Southampton, appeared before Chief Justice Richard Ground at the monthly Supreme Court arraignments session where she entered her not guilty pleas. The Chief Justice extended her $10,000 bail, ordered her to surrender her travel documents, and set the next hearing date for January 7.
Also appearing before the Chief Justice yesterday was Januari Samantha Gibbons, 29, who is accused of wounding Shuntae Erin Stayce Todd with intent on May 15 this year and causing actual bodily harm to Maia Lindsay Francis on the same date. Gibbons, of Orange Hole Road, St. David's, pleaded not guilty and will go on trial on March 8 2008.
In a separate matter three Southampton men ¿ Anthony Richards, 34, Morocco Barra Burch, 31, and Lekan Scott, 18, ¿ were all due to enter pleas to wounding Edward Gilbert with intent on November 30 2006.
Richards and Burch pleaded not guilty and were bailed. Scott failed to appear before the court and a warrant was issued by Mr. Justice Ground.
Barry Danford Lee, 33, denied causing grievous bodily harm to Sasha Swan on July 5 this year by driving a car while impaired. He also pleaded not guilty to causing injury to Octavia Azzario on the same date while driving a car on Front Street, Hamilton, driving while impaired and driving over the legal alcohol limit of 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.
Lee, of Morer Estate Road, Smith's, will appear before the court at a later date for a trial date to be set.
