Exiles serve up a royal headache
Commercial Division side Exiles took it to their highly-fancied Second Division opponents Port Royal, and secured victory by a lone goal from Dave Marchant in yesterday's only FA Cup preliminary round surprise.
Exiles took it to Port Royal from the opening whistle with sharp, crisp passing and good running off the ball. Antoine Cannonier was giving Port Royal fits with his speed down the flanks and the rest of his team-mates mopped up after him as they, literally, stymied their opponents and dictated the tempo throughout the duration of the match.
Port Royal threw all they had at a stubborn and tenacious Exile defence.
However, Exiles repelled them at every turn with tight marking and solid tackling.
Signs were ominous early as Exile's front line, consisting of Cannonier, Alan Johnson and Mark Thorne, tore gaping holes in Port Royal's defence and teed off at Royal goalkeeper Russell Smith at will.
In the 60th minute, Exiles were awarded a free kick from near the corner flag.
Marchant stroked his kick into the goalmouth, which the 'keeper had covered.
Somehow, the ball squirted out of the Smith's hands and found its way into the back of the net.
This served as a wake-up call for Port Royal as they began to pick up the pace and were unlucky not to pull back the equaliser, on two occasions, when they failed to capitalise on balls that went begging across the goalmouth.
In the 80th minute, Port Royal's Michael Holdipp put his team in agony as he caught Exiles 'keeper Lyndon Raynor 15 yards off his line and sent his shot just over the crossbar.
Exiles were then able to hold on and play controlled ball until the final whistle.
BAA 2, Prospect 1 The feature match at BAA field between Second Division sides Prospect United and BAA got off to a sizzling pace with the home side managing to hold on to beat out a spirited Prospect side 2-1.
Scoring for BAA were Marlon Simmons and Paul Franco. Replying for Prospect was Dwayne Leverock.
BAA got off the mark early with a sixth-minute strike from Simmons after a corner kick by Gary Flood. A hustling Dan Cherico picked up the cross and laid back a pass to an advancing Simmons who slotted the ball home from close in.
However, this served as only a temporary setback as Prospect came roaring back six minutes later via a powerful header by Leverock. The goal developed as Peter Philpott managed to beat his man down the line and square the ball into the goal area. Leverock was able to shield his man off the ball with his body and power his header just inside the right upright.
In the 33rd minute of play, Prospect goalkeeper Kuhn Evans, was unable to punch a crossed ball free of danger. The ball found its way to a waiting Franco who fired a low hard shot past a maze of bodies and inside the post. In the second half, Prospect came out with a greater sense of urgency and were able, repeatedly, to exploit the BAA defence.
However, at the precise moment, veteran Frankie Brewster and his stalwart cast of defenders managed to disrupt play and frustrate Prospect yet again.
Nonetheless, Prospect did have their opportunities to score. However, they hurt themselves in the final 15 minutes through a succession of misdirected shots.
Wolves 5, Island Rangers 1 Second Division leaders Wolves had little trouble against their Commercial Division opponents in the first match at Devonshire Rec. field.
They scored three goals in the first half and then added two more after the break. Island Rangers looked dangerous during counter-attacks late in the second half when they came close to scoring on two occasions.
Both chances for Island Rangers came from Troy Berkeley who put his first opportunity wide and then watched in agony as goalkeeper Andre Smith saved his blast from close range.
Wolves took a deserved 3-1 lead on goals by Andy Laws, Anthony Thomas and Nathan Webb while the lone tally by the visitors came from Blaine Outerbrige.
Wolves then built a commanding 5-1 lead after 47 minutes on quick goals in the second half by Laws and substitute Casey Burgess.
They created other scoring chances but poor shooting combined with some intelligent defending by Island Rangers prevented any further addition to the score.
Robin Hood 2, KPMG 0 Robin Hood easily moved into the first round of the FA Cup competition with an easy victory over a punchless KPMG squad at White Hill field.
The pub boys dominated the match from start to finish and but for their own poor execution in front of goal, coupled with the occassional fine save by KPMG goalkeeper Glenn Pitkethcy, the scoreline might have reached double figures.
Up front for Hood, Des Minors was in his usual dangerous form always threatening to find the first goal. Early in the match he latched onto the ball after a fine pass from Colin McQueen but could only manage to weakly steer the ball right at the 'keeper. Only seconds later the 'keeper dove well to save at Minors' feet.
After absorbing almost an entire half of pressure from Robin Hood, a defensive lapse by KPMG only minutes before the half-time whistle provided the first goal.
Minors was allowed to snake his way into the heart of the KPMG goalmouth and had only the 'keeper to beat as he rammed the ball home from the six-yard box.
In the dying moments of the half it looked as if the floodgates would open, but Hood were to be denied as on no less than three occassions they had goal-bound shots cleared off the line.
The second half was a mirror image of the first with Hood dominating the match, but unable to convert that domination into goals. It was not until two minutes before the final whistle that Colin Alexander connected with a header at the far post to close out the scoring.
Somerset Eagles 2, Paget 1 On their home turf at White Hill field, Somerset Eagles made hard work of their match with Paget, only managing to eke out a slim, one-goal victory.
The match could easily have been a rout as they had Paget on the defensive right from the opening whistle, but were abysmal in front of goal throughout the first half.
Stephen Burrows and Everett Wellman both were extremely effective off the ball in creating glaring holes in the Paget defence. This was where their effectiveness ended, though, as both missed easy chances in the first half for which their team would soon pay.
Against the run of play, Paget launched a quick counter-attack that caught Eagles flat-footed. Paget's lanky Ivan Trott collected the ball on the edge of penalty area and moved beautifully into the danger zone, leaving all of the defenders in his wake. His last move was the best, though, as he faked the goalkeeper and slipped the ball into the empty net.
The Eagles dominated the second half just as they did the first, but this time they managed to improve on their finishing. Only four minutes into the half, Wellman latched onto a through ball and coolly lifted it past the 'keeper for the equaliser.
Five minutes later, Terrance Christopher scored what was to be the winner with a low shot from close range.
