Ten-pin bowlers stage their own Cup Match
The 15th annual Bowlers' Cup Match will be held this Thursday night at Warwick Lanes where Somerset and St. George's cricket fans will get chance to battle it out in their own classic.
Seasoned bowlers as well as others who support the two cricket teams and have some knowledge of bowling can take part in the fun event, which takes place every year just prior to Cup Match, which will be held this year in Somerset a week later.
Organisers say that anyone who has an understanding of the game is welcome to play.
Creator and director of the tournament, Lionel Dowling, explained it was a 'fun' event but still intended to be competitive.
"This is strictly a fun tournament where, like the annual classic, everyone is out to have fun" said Dowling.
"One aspect of the tournament that people really like is the fact that a participant can receive a prize if he or she gets a strike when their head-pin is red or some other specified colour."
"Any number of players can represent a team and the average of each team's performance will determine the actual winner.
"Three games that are referred to as innings will be played, and common bowling terms will be converted to common cricket terms.
"For example, a "duck" will refer to a bowling having rolled their first ball down the gutter. "Clean Bowled" applies to a bowling getting a 7-10 split, in other words the middle stump is gone.
"Caught out" is an open 10th frame, "LBW" is leaving the 1-5 sleeper unconverted, "a run-out" is the 4-6-7-10 split, "a four" is two strikes in a row, "a six" is three strikes in a row, "a half-century" is four strikes in a row, and "a century" is five strikes in a row, and so on."
The games will be played with calypso music playing in the background.
Team captains will be appointed and a cup will be presented to the winning team, and an MVP will be selected at the end of the night.
Participants are encouraged to wear the colours of their chosen team, red and blue for Somerset, and light blue and dark blue for St. George's.
Tournament is scheduled to get underway at 7.00 p.m., with check-in starting at 6.15 p.m. Entry fee is $15 for the three games.
