Premier Paula Cox and her Cabinet repeated the mantra of doing more with less at a public meeting to discuss the Budget.For around two hours at Somerset Primary School, the Premier and almost all of her Ministers spoke with around 70 West end residents, discussing the impact the Budget will have on the community.“Budgets are not just about figures, budgets are about people,” she said at the Tuesday night meeting.Almost every department experienced cuts in the Budget for the upcoming financial year as the Government attempted to reach the goal of reducing spending by $150 million.Public Works Minister Derrick Burgess addressed several issues specific to the West end, including ongoing trench work and issues with garbage collection.Mr Burgess said that the trenching is being carried out in order to provide the public with more water, saying: “If you can have either bumpy roads, or you can have water, most people would rather have water.”He also said that the Ministry was working to rearrange the trash collection schedule to run five days a week instead of four, and that they were in the process of purchasing additional trash trucks.Transportation Minster Terry Lister discussed plans to cut back on the ferry and bus service in order to find savings, saying that the assets the Ministry have can be used more efficiently without a major decrease in service.“I believe that the Ministry will deliver, but it will deliver with a little less,” he said.During a question and answer segment, Health Minister Zane DeSilva promised that funds have been allocated for improvements to Lefroy House, but he could not say when exactly the work would take place.He also told the audience that he has met with physicians and health care providers to make sure that people get the medical treatment they require, and gave an update on the construction of the new hospital building , which he said was on schedule and under budget.l Useful website: www.gov.bm
