Hundreds turn out for Rise Above, Bermuda launch
More than 400 people showed up to meet the Rise Above, Bermuda 30 day challenge at Victor Scott Primary School last night.
The community action group was started by four men — brothers Wayne, Dwayne and Travis Caines and Dr. Lou Matthews — who grew up on St. Monica's Road in the wake of Kumi Harford's murder on Saturday.
Some 15 shots were fired and nine of them are said to have hit Mr. Harford. The murder was described by Police as "an escalation in the violence" compared to previous shootings across the Island.
No one has been arrested so far.
In the audience were his wife Rachel and mother Valita. His wife told The Royal Gazette: "I am happy that everyone turned out."
During the discussions in a group targeting gang intervention Rachel said: "We need to get the children involved [in a march through troubled Pembroke areas] let them see the children. I have a son who is not going to have a father."
The purpose of last night's meeting was not to identify why gun violence was on the rise or tackle large institutional changes, such as fixing Bermuda's public education system.
Instead, the organisers asked those in attendance to decide on six things that could be done within 30 days to promote: gang intervention, faith-based leadership, community capacity building, national mentoring and youth, vision and development.
Throughout the primary school ideas were bandied about including organising teams to walk through known hot-spots at night and engage at-risk youth, a community hot line where people uncomfortable calling the Police could tell someone about issues in their community and a team dedicated to mediating between the gangs and convincing them to call a truce.
Another group focused on how to implement school talks and creating a public-relations campaign highlighting the positive things young people do around the Island.
A spokesman for the group said: "I think tonight was special and a turning point for our country. This has encouraged the average person to effect change.
"We have had three mothers and a grandmother of young men who have been shot here tonight working together.
"We have had 70 different opinions coming together as one voice. Everybody is moving towards action, tonight was not about talking."
