Jury visits death scene near beach
The jury in the Kellon Hill murder trial yesterday visited the beach road where the teenager was stabbed to death.
Four men and eight women were accompanied to Elbow Beach by Police, prosecution and defence lawyers and the trial judge, Chief Justice Richard Ground QC.
Also present was defendant Kellan Lewis and court and Corrections officers. Lewis, who was dressed in a brown suit, is currently on bail.
The 18-year-old denies murdering Mr. Hill and possessing a knife on August 9, 2008.
Mr. Hill, 18, died from a stab wound to the heart after trying to retrieve a gold chain which Lewis allegedly snatched from around his neck at a party.
Lewis was one of seven teenagers arrested by Police in the early hours of August 10, 2008, on suspicion of involvement in Mr. Hill's death.
The incident took place in the public access road to Elbow Beach as Mr. Hill was leaving at around 11 p.m.
The Crown say he was set upon by Lewis, 18, Gary Hollis, 16, Zharrin Simmons, 17, Devon Hairston, 18, and Kevin Warner, 19.
He was attacked with a walking cane, motorcycle helmets and a knife. The prosecution say he was also stabbed with a screwdriver.
After Mr. Hill collapsed to the ground, the teenagers allegedly ran along Elbow Beach to the Coral Beach Tennis Club. There they made their way through the property towards South Road but were found hiding in the bushes near the entrance by security staff.
After being asked to leave, one of the security guards said they walked along the road but then ran into Stovell Estate after spotting an oncoming Police car.
Yesterday the jury retraced the steps of the victim and the accused, noting where Mr. Hill collapsed after the fight.
They then walked west along Elbow Beach to look at the access steps to the grounds of Coral Beach and a sandy road leading up to the property.
The site visit then made its way through the grounds, past cottages and the tennis courts to a lawned area off the main driveway.
Here, by Witchwood Cottage, the jurors spent ten minutes peering into the bushes on a grassy bank the alleged hiding place of the accused and his friends on the night of the murder.
They then walked to South Road to view Stovell Lane and the fields of Stovell Estate.
The trial continues.
