New ADC gets ready for Government house duty

with aide-de-camp Captain Larry Mussenden handing his duties over to his successor, Captain Edward Lamb.

Capt. Lamb, who is the first St. David's Islander to assume the post, has been orienting himself with his new responsibilities over the past two weeks, and is looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead.

He especially welcomes trading "the 9-to-5 world'' he knew for the hectic and varied schedule of the Governor's right hand man.

In a general sense, it is the ADC's duty to "manage the affairs of Government House'', but there is much more behind this simplified description than meets the eye.

"It's not all pomp and ceremony,'' said Capt. Lamb.

Falling under Capt. Lamb's responsibility is Government House staff administration, budget preparation, transportation and organisation of the Governor's busy schedule.

"There is a lot of background work and preparation that goes into every function,'' said Capt. Lamb. "Many people don't realise just how much goes on behind the scenes.'' An ADC's most important duty -- and one that Capt. Lamb takes very seriously -- is the safety and well-being of the Governor. The highest standards of security must be maintained at all times, and he is determined to see that there are no lapses.

"I supervise all Police officers assigned to Government House,'' he explained. "I will be monitoring them constantly to make sure they are fulfilling their duties in a proper manner.'' Educated at Berkley Institute and the Bermuda College, Capt. Lamb, 31, volunteered for the Bermuda Regiment in 1980 to start his three years of service "and get them over with''.

During this early stint with the the regiment, he attained the rank of Sargeant Major -- the highest ranking for a non-commissioned, part-time soldier.

He then decided to take on the challenge of becoming a commissioned officer.

In 1989, he was made a full Lieutenant of the Bermuda Regiment, and was this year promoted to Captain.

Prior to his appointment, Captain Lamb was an account executive with Sedgwick James (Bermuda) Limited. Following his two-year tenure, he expects to return to the accounting field, and obtain his Certified General Accountant qualifications.
