School ransacked
Vandals rampaged through a primary school at the weekend, shattering glass doors, ransacking desks and causing so much damage that many pupils had to stay at home yesterday. The culprits got into the Gilbert Institute in Paget via a window and caused extensive damage, leaving a trail of broken glass and dislodged books.
The destruction meant classes for students in years P1, 2, 3 and 6 had to be cancelled yesterday.
P4 and P5 pupils were able to attend lessons in another area of the St. Michael’s Lane school.
School principal Eunice Jones did not return telephone messages left for her by The Royal Gazette <$>yesterday but she told ZBM television news: “I think it’s a sad day when someone would break into a school.
“It makes the students feel very unsafe and on edge. We are going to have to work with them to let them know they are safe and we are going to secure the building.”
She said staff members were unable to clear up the mess on Sunday and a professional cleaning firm was brought in.
She added that a small amount of money and a games console were stolen during the break-in.
Police are investigating the incident and classes for all years will resume today.
