Bank introduces ATM on wheels

Money on the move: Bank of Bermuda CEO Philip Butterfield tries out the Bank's new mobile ATM.

Bank users will be able to get hold of their money quite literally 'on the go' thanks to a new mobile ATM service launched by the Bank of Bermuda.

The Mobile ATM, which is the first of its kind and was officially unveiled at Albouys Point yesterday, allows customers to withdraw cash and access all of the other services offered by a standard ATM, with the exception of banking deposits.

The ATM, which is outfitted in a custom-made van, will be available at a number of events both in Hamilton and Island-wide, including Cup Match, the Rugby World Classic and the Bermuda Music Festival.

It was developed in response to the growing number of community events being held outdoors and outside of Hamilton and is aimed to provide a greater level of convenience to customers.

Philip Butterfield, the Bank of Bermuda's CEO, said the new ATM was the latest in long line of customer service enhancements the bank was implementing.

"You should have access to your money when you wish to and we want to make that as easy as possible," he said.

"Wherever Bermudians and visitors are gathered, you will see us in our red van.

"This is just the beginning of a number of new things that the Bank of Bermuda as part of HSBC will bring to its clients."

Mr. Butterfield, who also tried out the service for himself, said the main reason behind the introduction of the mobile ATM was to meet customer demand and complement the 40 other standard ATMs stationed around the Island.

"In the past we have gone to great lengths to provide ATM services to our customers at some of the larger community events, such as Cup Match, and realised that this was a service our customers could benefit from on an ongoing basis," he said.

"With the advent of more and more community events, we believe our mobile ATM service will allow us to meet the needs of our customers.

"By launching this van, the Bank of Bermuda will become the first financial company on the Island to provide this convenient service to customers."

Asked about security issues concerning the van, Mr. Butterfield replied that the bank had "taken the appropriate steps in consultation with both the Police and the Bermuda Monetary Authority" and that he could "assure that the vehicle is safeguarded and will be able to ward off any unreasonable actions by any members of the public".
