Teacher Frank (Buck) Rogers dies
Mr. Frank (Buck) Rogers, who was over 90, was buried on January 28. During the many years he lived in Bermuda influenced the lives of hundreds of students at Saltus Grammar School and Warwick Academy. He taught me Latin at Saltus and I found him to be a strict, but fair school teacher. He demanded and, for the most part, got the best out of his students. They respected him and owe him a great debt for his untiring efforts on their behalf.
Mr. Rogers was a unique person, who dedicated his life to his students both in and outside the classroom. He had very little interest in making money and he often tutored his students after school without charge.
His devotion to his students was rewarded by their organising a fund to pay for him to have a holiday in Greece. As a classical scholar at Cambridge University he had always wanted to visit Greece, but had never managed to get there. The fund raiser was oversubscribed and he had a wonderful trip to Greece.
He was always called ?Buck? because no one could find out what his middle initial ?B? stood for and it was thought appropriate to give him the name of a famous and very dynamic cartoon character!
School teachers have a great influence over the future lives of their students and I can think of no teacher who did more to shape the lives of those he taught then Frank ?Buck? Rogers. The success achieved by so many of them owes a great deal to his selfless devotion to them.
Let us hope that a scholarship will be established in his name so that the present and future students of Bermuda will benefit from his contribution to education in Bermuda.
