Bean lifts Bowl with final round surge
Cornell Bean jr is the new 15 and over Glidden Bowl golf champion.
The 16-year-old Warwick Academy student carded a two-over-par 72 at Tucker?s Point on Thursday to finish with a three-round total of 220 and clinch the tournament by six shots over Nick Jones (226).
Bean entered the final round all square with Jones, but jumped out to an early two-stroke lead.
Yet Jones refused to buckle under pressure and managed to claw his way back into contention and draw level with Bean just before making the turn.
However, three birdies on the back nine ? including a 70-foot breaking putt at the par-four 13th ? was enough to earn Bean a second Glidden Bowl title and bragging rights among his peers.
Justin Madeiros (237) finished third after a final round of 78.
?I was in Florida a couple weeks ago where I played pretty bad. So to come back and play better golf certainly feels good,? said Bean, the reigning Bermuda Junior Amateur champion.
?The course was in really good condition, especially the greens that were rolling smooth and pretty fast.
?Overall I thought my game was pretty good and I was really geared up for this particular tournament.?
Bean will defend his Bermuda Junior Amateur title at Port Royal in July.
?I?m really looking forward to that tournament as well,? the teenage golfer added.
Meanwhile, Damian Palanyandi (231) won the 13 to 14 junior age group after a final round of 80 with Alex Osborne (235) and Yana Ballantyne (258) finishing second and third respectively.
Ryan Roberts (244) clinched the 12 and under age group by a landslide over Scott Gilbertson (331).
