Cold weather may wash out warm-up matches
The grim reality that warm-up matches in Bermuda in early March would hardly be warm could rob Bermuda of any part in the Cricket World Cup 2007.
Sports Minister Dale Butler ? just back from witnessing the allocation of World Cup matches in Jamaica ? says World Cup officials have asked for more information about the Island's winter and noted the warm-up series scheduled for Bermuda could be in jeopardy.
"At the moment we remain resolute that we're committed to the warm-ups but we have to now inform Government that those warm-ups have been moved to early March and that they (World Cup organisers) have requested additional information about the weather situation here in Bermuda," he said. "I think they were hinting at something."
Pressed on if he felt the hint was that warm-up games would have to be relocated, he replied: "You can read between the lines. You know what March is like in Bermuda.
"But we were going on (the understanding that the matches would be at) the end of March which is a much better situation but they said the beginning of March."
Regarding Bermuda's position as first alternate for first-round fixtures in the Cricket World Cup 2007 being staged in the Caribbean, Butler said the Island's delegation to Jamaica was informed exactly what's expected of Bermuda.
"We will give that report to the Premier and Government and they will make a decision based on it.
"We have to decide, based on the definition of first alternate, what our next steps will be."
The Minister said cricket and Government officials will hold a feedback session this weekend and Cabinet will review the issue on Tuesday. An announcement, he said, should follow by the end of next week outlining where Bermuda stands.
