Larger track sought for harness racing
and popularity of the sport has forced officials to seek a bigger track.
"We are trying very hard to have the Vesey Street facility extended to accomodate a larger track for the harness ponies to race on,'' said official Annie Sousa.
"The ponies are getting faster and faster and with more and more people getting involved in the sport, the facility as it is now is just too small and dangerous.'' This Sunday sees the final race day of the season and because of that this past weekend's racing took on a more urgent twist as drivers competed for the various trophies that will be presented at the end of the season.
The majority of the trophies are won for either most points, most wins or fastest times. The fastest time for a mare is being battled between Michael DeCosta's Custom Eyes'D -- who had a one-fifth of a second advantage -- and Jonnie Five's Melody Time.
The fastest time for a stallion is between the track record-holder Shamrock Tuxedo and Eddie the Great. The fastest gelding will almost certainly go to Carolina Jubilee, unless Grand Magic or Abbies Casanova can pull something out of the hat.
For the first time there will be a Ladies Trophy for most wins, with Samantha Stevenson, Andrea Westerfield and Annie Sousa all in contention.
The Junior Driver Trophy will be contested by Collin Mello, Raymond Tucker and Nicholas DeCosta.
