The Bermuda Track and Field Association has released the names of runners who will represent the country in the annual Falmouth Road Race in Falmouth, Cape
The runners chosen were at the top of the KPMG Peat Marwick Road Running Series, which came to a conclusion on Sunday with the Athletic Club 5-K. Top males Mark Perry, Kavin Smith and Brett Forgesson, the three leading open runners, along with veterans Giorgio Zanol and Mike Rickards will be heading for the Massachusetts ocean playground, along with Harry Patchett who was picked from the masters category. Jeremy Ball was overall first-place finisher but is unavailable to attend the event.
Top females participating will include open runners Maria Conroy-Hayden, Anna Eatherley and Lynn Kynoch and masters runners Sandra Mewett and Peggy Couper.
Geoffrey Blee, Dorothy Gilchrist, Jane Christie and Elaine Watkinson, winners of a draw held following The Athletic Club 5-K, will also be running in Falmouth. Several local runners will also be making the trip to participate in the race.
There remains a few openings for the Cape Cod race and anyone interested in going should contact Ray Ming at 238-2042 by tonight.
Meanwhile, the Cape Cod representatives are requested to attend a meeting at the Gilbert Institute School on Monday, July 12 at 8 p.m.
The BTFA is organising a half marathon to provide an opportunity for Bermudian athletes to qualify for the CAC Senior Championships for August. The half marathon will take place tomorrow at 6 a.m. beginning at the Bermudiana Hotel and will follow the international half marathon route. Qualifying times for men will be under 1:14, and for women under 1:25.
There is no pre-registration for the event and those interested in qualifying or participating should report to the start line at 5.45 a.m. For more information, George Sutherland can be contacted at 238-0566. DARTS DRT Stephen Hayward and Elizabeth Simons are atop the men's and women's leader boards at the half-way point in the World Cup play-offs. Haywards leads the men's pack with a 19-5 record, followed by Ronnie Thorne (16-8), Vernon Daniels (14-10) and Wayne Harvey (13-9).
Simons boasts an impressive 9-1 record followed closely behind by Brenda Hutton who is 8-3.
Bermuda will enter two squads for this year's World Cup in Las Vegas in October. The top four men and top two women will qualify. Next week's action takes place at the BAA at 8 p.m.
TENNIS TEN The Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association will conduct a two-day workshop for umpires beginning tomorrow at the Tennis Stadium from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. On Sunday the course runs from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
