Ingersoll buys Geith

NEW YORK (Bloomberg) ? Ingersoll-Rand Co., the maker of Bobcat machinery and Thermo-King refrigerated trucks, agreed to buy Geith International to boost its offerings of industrial attachments for machines used in construction and excavation.

Founded in Slane, Ireland in 1950, Geith is being sold by management shareholders and two venture capital funds managed by Bank of Scotland (Ireland) Ltd., Bermuda-based Ingersoll-Rand said. Terms of the transaction, expected to close by the end of the year, weren't disclosed.

The acquisition of Geith would help Ingersoll-Rand bolster distribution and develop technology in its construction business. Chief executive officer Herbert Henkel said in June he plans about $400 million in purchases this year as he builds areas such as security and refrigeration.

Geith has about 290 workers and $54 million in annual sales. It runs production and service plants in Tredegar, Wales and Petersburg, Virginia, as well as a sales office in Pierrelaye, France.
