At the right Place at the right time

A Bermudian student has been chosen to study medicine at some of Australia's most prestigious medical institutions.

Merate Kristos Place is taking part in the International Mission on Medicine, organised by the National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF), which has placed her for two weeks a medicine college as well as with the flying doctors programme.

She has also travelled to Bolivia, Botswana and New Mexico.

The Berkeley Institute graduate is accompanying 80 other students from the United States who are interested in medical careers and who will be based in Australia until May 27.

The aim of the International Mission on Medicine is to provide students with an educational and culturally enriching experience, which is designed to add to their personal knowledge.

Merate is visiting some of Australia's medical institutions and seeing first-hand various centres of excellence and innovation in the study of medicine.

The 21-year-old is specialising in anaesthetics at Emory University in Atlanta where she was chosen for the expedition.

"As students like Merate Place progress in their studies it becomes increasingly important to gain a full perspective on how medicine is practised in the United States and abroad," said Donna Synder, executive director of the NYLF.

"The NYLF enthusiastically joins the efforts of colleges and universities in offering experimental education that compliments and enhances pre-med college education."

Merate will be able to witness medicine in practice at The Royal Flying Doctor Service and at the University of Sydney's department of general practice.

She will also have close contact with doctors, surgeons, researchers, scientists and medical educators as they go behind the scenes to view the professionals at work.

Merate graduated with her International Baccalaureate from the Armand Hammer United World College of the American West in New Mexico.
