Young cricketer fined for riding underage
A young cricket star has been fined after riding a motorcycle on the western section of the Railway Trail while underage.
Marico Bassett, 17, of Loyalty Drive, Sandys, admitted the offence along with attempting to pervert the course of justice by giving a false name after his arrest.
Crown counsel Larissa Burgess told Magistrates' Court that Bassett pretended to be Kavon Hart, 19, after being stopped by police for riding the 100cc bike on December 10.
Bassett told the court that Hart is a good friend of his.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo quizzed him: "You would dump on a good friend?"
The defendant replied: "I was scared."
Bassett also told the court he is unemployed and his dreams have recently been shattered because a broken foot ruled him out of the under-19 cricket World Cup.
Mr. Tokunbo warned he could send him to prison for attempting to pervert the course of justice. However, after hearing the teenager plead for "a hefty fine" instead, that is what he handed him — to the tune of $2,600.
He warned: "Pay it by Christmas. Father Christmas is right here and I want my present now! That's your penalty. You can't have it for Christmas."
Mr. Tokunbo also doled out seven penalty points for the driving offence, telling Bassett he faces 100 days in jail if he fails to pay his fines.
