Youngsters line up for Mile

reaching the 1,000 entry mark, as the 980 youngsters registered represent an increase of almost 200 on last year's numbers.

Action begins at noon with the first of seven age group races and all of the top junior runners, including Flora Duffy, Tyler Abbott, Henry Talbot, Coyatito Smith and Ka-von Tucker, who won last month's Bank of Butterfield Mile and recently became the over nine primary boys champion.

Competitors range in age from four to 15 and they should collect their numbers between 8.30 and 11.00 at Devonshire Rec. this morning. Those volunteers assisting with the distribution of numbers should meet at Devonshire Rec. by 8.15 while all other officials should report to the National Centre by 11.00.

"The sponsors are really excited about the numbers,'' said race director Cal Simons yesterday.

"Last year we had 789 runners, which is almost 200 more this year. I'm really surprised by the lower age groups.

"The largest is the boys 10-12 boys where there is something like 153 runners. The 9-10 boys have 137 and the 9-10 girls 111. The lower age groups have swelled by 50 runners in most cases.'' Entry for spectators will be through the eastern gates on Frog Lane and there will be parking available at CedarBridge Academy.
