Bermuda all-rounder Saleem Mukuddem yesterday tore a leaf from the book of England pacer Andrew Flintoff.

Mukuddem, who became the first Bermuda bowler to claim a World Cup wicket against Sri Lanka at Queen’s Park Oval last week, sat out yesterday’s match through suspension after he was found to have infringed terms of his Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) contract.

But last night officials were remaining tight-lipped, refusing to divulge exactly what he had done wrong.

The South African born cricketer was noticeably absent from Bermuda’s line-up when the team took to the field after winning the toss and sending the Indians into bat on a placid track.

It wasn’t until during the post match press conference that Bermuda skipper Irving Romaine revealed that his player had been disciplined for undisclosed reasons, and as such, forced to make way for youngster Malachi Jones to come into the team in his absence.

“I don’t know if I should really speak on that, but disciplinary action was taken against Saleem Mukuddem although I can’t really say what happened. It’s a matter for management and the selectors to deal with,” he told reporters.

When pressed, chairman of national team selectors Arnold Manders confirmed that Mukuddem had been punished, but declined to reveal further details on the matter.

“I can’t divulge that information at this time. But he did infringe terms of his contract,” the former Western Stars and Bermuda skipper said.

Flintoff was dropped for England’s match last Sunday against Associate team Canada and stripped of the vice-captaincy after a late-night drinking binge following the Test side’s opening World Cup loss to New Zealand.
