Saleem missed meeting

Bermuda's Saleem Mukuddem celebrates the dismissal of Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya, unseen, during the Cricket World Cup Group B match in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad last Thursday

Bermuda all-rounder Saleem Mukuddem should reclaim his spot in the Island’s World Cup team after serving out a one-match suspension.

Sources told The Royal Gazette yesterday that the 35-year-old cricketer was banned from playing against India on Monday and deducted match fees for failing to attend an official team gathering with the rest of his team-mates in Trinidad.

Mukuddem’s absence deprived Bermuda of another bowling option and a pivotal bat in the team’s middle order during the Island’s humiliating defeat against the Indians at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain.

In a short statement, Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) president Reggie Pearman — in Trinidad attending the World Cup — said: “An infraction involving Saleem (Mukuddem) did take place and my executives met and took the necessary disciplinary action.

“I don’t feel we should go into anymore details over the matter because it has already been widely publicised that disciplinary measures have been put in place for anyone who breaches the code of conduct.

“The code was breached, and we took action. And that’s the end of the matter as far as we are concerned.”

Nearly a week ago the South African born Mukuddem made local cricket history by becoming the first Bermuda cricketer to take a wicket in the World Cup. He also led Bermuda’s attack in claiming two wickets for 50 runs against Sri Lanka at the Oval.
