A self-confessed heroin addict who robbed the people who tried to help him was yesterday jailed for 18 months.Jamaine Quidir Salaam,36, of no fixed abode, was sentenced in Magistrates’ Court after admitting to two counts of robbery.Senior Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney said that Salaam came to the Somerset Road residence of Kevin Roberts just after midnight on January 7, asking for dry clothes and money for gasoline.Mr Roberts gave him $3, which Salaam told him wasn’t enough. Mr Roberts then told him to leave. As Mr Roberts gave him another dollar, Salaam snatched $230 out of the cab driver’s jacket pocket.Mr Roberts demanded his money back and said he would call the police, at which point Salaam told him to “call the man”.Mr Mahoney then told the court that Cinthia Anderson, who was also acquainted with Salaam, had offered him a place to stay at her home on St John’s Road, Pembroke. She asked Salaam to leave the residence on January 8.A friend who checked the house at 5pm found a laptop computer missing, along with an external hard drive and a Samsung mobile phone a total value of $1,760.Ms Anderson was able to recover her possessions later from a third party.Magistrate Juan Wolffe noted that a social inquiry report indicated a lack of remorse, disregard for the law and a high risk of offending again. He sentenced Salaam to 18 months’ imprisonment, with drug counselling. Time spent in custody is to be taken into account.
