Sandys man bailed after he denies manslaughter hit-and-run charge

A man accused of killing a 22-year-old in an alleged hit and run incident last September 6 pleaded not guilty to several charges at Supreme Court yesterday.

Mendall Outerbridge, 23, of Sandys is accused of the manslaughter of Raymond (Smockie) Curtis. Mr. Curtis, also of Sandys, was allegedly struck by a car in Malabar Road as he walked home from Woody's Sports Bar in the early hours.

Outerbridge is further alleged to have caused Mr. Curtis' death by driving a car in a dangerous manner, driving the same car with invalid vehicle and driver's licenses, and without third party insurance.

Chief Justice Richard Ground set Outerbridge's trial for May 11, and granted him bail until then.

The defendant's girlfriend, Leonae Jameca Simmons, was originally charged alongside him at Magistrates' Court last September with being an accessory to manslaughter after the fact.

Aged 19 at the time, Simmons was said by prosecutors to have received, relieved or assisted a person to escape punishment. However, the charge against her was dropped last month at Magistrates' Court.

In a separate case during yesterday's monthly arraignments session, Andre Victor Eugene Castle admitted seriously sexually assaulting a woman in St. George's on August 12 2007 and causing her bodily harm. Castle, 25, also admitted robbing the same woman of her purse and BlackBerry cell phone. She cannot be identified for legal reasons.

Castle, of Devonshire, was remanded into custody and will be sentenced once background reports have been completed.

In another sex case, a 29-year-old man from Pembroke pleaded guilty to two charges of having unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under 14, and one of sexually exploiting her by touching.

The man, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, committed the offences last December. No further information was given in court about the circumstances. He is in custody and will be sentenced at a later date once background reports are completed.

In a separate case, 43-year-old Maxwell Sinclair Roberts appeared before the court accused of an attempted $200,00 fraud relating to the publication of a book.

Roberts, of St. George's, told the Chief Justice he is "definitely not guilty" to the lengthy charge read out in court yesterday. It alleges that on November 12, 2008 he dishonestly attempted to obtain the money from the English Sports Shop and Ronald Maughan by deception.

According to the charge, the deception was that Roberts represented himself to be an agent of the publishing firm Harper Collins, saying he intended to publish a book by Maxwell Roberts.

No further details were given, and Roberts will stand trial on April 20. Defence lawyer Marc Daniels said although Roberts was offered bail during a previous court appearance, he can't find anyone to meet the $1,000 surety and remains in custody.

The Chief Justice was not prepared to reconsider the issue yesterday, but said Roberts can make an application for the variation of his bail later if he wishes.

In addition, Edward Shawn Dill, 40, of Pembroke, was charged with importing cocaine and possessing it with intent to supply on August 30, 2008. He pleaded not guilty and his trial was set for May 11. He was granted bail until then.

Also facing drug charges was Melvin Simons, 21, of Sandys. He is accused of importing cocaine and possessing it with intent to supply on January 3, 2009. He pleaded not guilty and was bailed until his trial on May 18.
